Mad Dog Energy Shot

Mad Dog Energy Shots have been discontinued.

Lately, energy shots have been propagating at a crazy rate. At one point, the energy drink section was only in a small cooler – yet now, it’s common to see entire shelves of them. Now, the energy shot is starting to earn its own place on those shelves.

Consumers are used to the typical energy drink and companies have responded with super-potent concoctions to stimulate even the most tolerant of people. I have here two energy shots from Mad Dog, their stab at the emerging energy shot market.

Mad Dod Energy Shot Flavor

I had the opportunity to check out Mad Dog’s blueberry pomegranate and fruit punch flavored shots.

Blueberry pomegranate – This one definitely isn’t meant to be savored. It was explicitly bitter and watery, with a subtle blueberry taste, significantly overpowered by sucralose. The pomegranate flavor seems to be missing.

Fruit punch – Very similar to a standard juice box punch. The aftertaste seems to have a subtle note of tropical flavoring, but the sucralose still hits hard. It’s far more tolerable than the previous flavor, but nowhere near perfect.

Ingredients

It is interesting that Mad Dog contains a mixture of enzymes, something not usually found in energy drinks nor shots today. Mad Dog is also sugar, carbohydrate, and calorie free. It also contains a proprietary energy blend, containing “about as much caffeine as a cup of brewed coffee” (which is typically around 100mg) with certain amino acids and B-vitamins. Besides the enzyme mixture, this shot has pretty average ingredients.

Energy

Consumed in the morning, this shot provides a moderate boost of energy. I’m not bouncing off the walls, but my senses are definitely sharper and my mood has lifted a bit. This shot could benefit from a slightly higher amount of caffeine to compete with some of the much more powerful shots out there.

Mad Dog’s energy shots provide a satisfactory energy boost, but suffer from an abhorrent sucralose aftertaste. With some flavor tweaking, they could be much more appealing. For now, I’m not impressed.
