Review
My story with Zun Energy Drink began on a regular night like any other. I was up late burning the midnight oil as I so often do.
I was drifting, losing focus, but I was not quite ready to go to sleep yet. Then I hobble on over to my fridge and pull out a black spaceship (or rocket, whichever you prefer) shaped bottle. I was at first perplexed by the name, so I did a little research before my consumption. The word zun originates from China, and it refers to an ancient wine carrying vessel used in ceremonies of religious purpose.
What this has to do with a spaceship I do not know, but the bottle is a vessel that carries a form of liquid. Although, when you read the name I assume you pronounce it like "zune". So far I am a bit confused with the name, but I am done trying to decipher it. It states on the bottle that Zun is "Out of this world" and that it gives brain boosting energy. At this time of night the brain does indeed need a boost, so lets dive in (or blast off).
Taste
This is a drink that smells and tastes delicious. Zun Energy Drink is very creamy and smooth and reminds of red cream soda, but not as sticky and with more raspberry and cherry added in. There is also a flavor that I cannot seem to grasp or place. Zun has a mystery flavor! The taste is simply superb and quite delicious. So as you can guess, this 12oz. did not last too long.
Ingredients
Now here we have some interesting components. Besides the 100mg of caffeine, Zun has a Proprietary Brain Boosting Energy Blend coming in at 625mg which includes Coenzyme Q10 (which I have never heard of before), Ginkgo Biloba (a personal favorite), Choline, Taurine, and of course Caffeine. Along with that is has 100% of Vitamin C, E, and B6, as well as 500% of Vitamin B12. It also has a modest 160 calories.
Now Coenzyme Q10 caught me eye, so I need to dig a little. Apparently it is an antioxidant and has many different uses. It has beneficial effects on migraine sufferers, is being investigated as a treatment for cancer, and even leads to longer lifespan in rats (when combined with a certain diet).
Effect
I already knew that by drinking this beverage I would not get a massive burst of energy. It is simply not a drink designed for that. What I did get however was the disappearance of my weariness and heavy eyelids. I was able to focus on what I was doing, and this little Zun rocket ship drove me straight home until 11 AM when I promptly crashed. My brain was definitely defogged and I enjoyed the ride.
Verdict
My one and only qualm would have to be the name. Zun is too unrecognizable and it doesn't really relate to anything on the bottle or go with the theme of brain boosting space travel. Besides the name though, this is a great beverage for some sustainable energy that goes hand in hand with focus and clarity. Zun Energy Drink has the one of the best bottles I have seen and I would snatch it up immediately if I saw Zun on a shelf somewhere.
